Professional experience so far….

We are finally working through week 3 of our prac and as much as I have loved every day with the children, I am also really looking forward to getting back to normal life, (like sleeping:)). This prac has been a great experience, after spending so many years learning about all these strategies to support children’s learning it is such a relief to see that they are actually needed for teaching, especially for example a few of my lessons have been using Blooms Taxonomy and it was good to see how this fitted into my lesson plans. A couple of other strategies I have discovered from my mentor is DAD which stands for draw a diagram. This is used in math activities where the children can draw pictures to represent the numbers to support their addition skills and another one is AO, Acting Out, where the children can stand up and act out the algorithm to support their learning. When they get use to acting out they can then substitute the real children for Lego people and use those to support their addition.

Explanation of theories for teaching

Theory Purpose Application to assignment 3/Professional Experience
CLEM Model Help understand how to learn about a new ICT and how to use it to enhance student learning If there are any new ICTs you need to use it might help your explorations.
TPACK Framework Stands for Technology, Pedagogy and Content Knowledge. TPACK offers a way to think about the different types of knowledge required to design effective ICT rich learning experiences. Part D of the assignment where you need to know how you will be teaching a particular concept and include the available technologies that can be integrated in the ICT rich environment.
Backwards Design Work backwards with your planning by starting with the outcome you want then through the assessment and then the learning experiences. Can be used to prepare the lesson plans. Our mentor will tell us what outcome the children need to meet and we can then develop our lesson plans using the backward design.
SAMR Model The model allows the teacher to gauge how technology is used in the classroom. The model is based on ICT as a tool for learning not a substitute for a teacher. Will be used to ensure I choose appropriate ICTs to enhance the children’s learning.
TIP Model Helps with the meaningful and effective integration of ICTs into teaching and learning through focusing on ‘why’ ICTs are integrated. To integrate ICTs into the students environments to enhance their learning and development.
The 5 E’s An inquiry approach used mainly for science with hands-on minds – on activities Can be very useful for teaching the science topics.

This can be used when introducing a new topic or concept to the students.
Connectivism A theory based on Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development.
Bloom’s taxonomy Used to develop higher order thinking. Has 6 different levels of thinking to guide questioning and planning. The 6 levels are Remembering, Understanding, Applying, Analysing, Evaluating and Creating. Can be used to guide questioning and planning and support the development of the students higher order thinking.
Postman’s 5 things 1st Thing – that we always pay a price for technology; the greater the technology the greater the price.

2nd thing – that there are always winners and losers and that the winners will always try to persuade the losers that they are really winners,

3rd thing – that there is embedded in every great technology an epistemological, political or social prejudice.

4th thing – technological change is not addictive, it is ecological, which means it changes everything and is, therefore, too important to be left entirely in the hands of Bill Gates.

5th thing – technology tends to become mythic, perceived as part of the natural order of things and therefore tens to control more of our lives than is good for us. When technology becomes mythic, it is always dangerous because it’s then accepted as it is and is therefore not easily susceptible to modification or control.

Toolbelt theory/TEST framework Scaffolding to help find the most appropriate tool to achieve the required outcome. Will help to decide which ICT will support the students in reaching the required outcome.
PKM PKM is an acronym for Personal Knowledge Management. PKM gives you a framework to develop a network of people and sources of information that you can draw from on a daily basis. Look at my PKM to find ICT tools and other relevant sources of information.

SAMR Model for iPad apps

I’ve been a bit absent from the blog for the past couple of weeks and have just gone through my Feedly account and have found numerous fantastic blogs on different technologies to use in the classroom. I have got so much information that I want to put together to make it easier to read and use but just need to find the time to sort through it all.  Anyway one of the blogs I read was called Educational Technology and Mobile Learning which had a great article on Integrating SAMR model with iPad apps. I’ve attached a copy of the poster for you to look at and I have already started downloading some of these to use on my prac next week.

Take the Lollipop

Well I logged on to the “take the lollipop” website and I have never felt so sick in my guts before.  Anyone who has done this will understand what I am talking about.  My profile picture on Facebook was a picture of myself with my son, and as soon as the Take this Lollipop started to play the first thing I saw as my sons face on this creepy mans computer. Well as soon as it was finished I went straight into Facebook and deleted every photo of him that was there and even changed my profile picture to a picture of my name written in the sand.  I know that from now on I will be a lot more careful about what I but online….. Next job is to google myself….

Being Cybersmart

Part of week 8’s learning path (yes, I’m a bit behind lol) had us working on modules through connect.ed. I found these quite interesting and downloaded a fair bit of information that I could use in lesson planning for the future, maybe even for prac in a few weeks.  When I saw the figures of what age children are when they are using different ICTs I was amazed at how young they are starting. My one son is 10 and uses YouTube and Xbox to play games but thats about it, he doesn’t have a phone or Facebook (or any other social media), yet there were others his age with both of these.  Working through the cyber-bullying module was interesting, and a bit scary. Its bad enough that these children get bullied at school, but to have to get it online as well is just disgusting.  I’m glad I completed these modules as I will endeavour as a teacher to ensure any of my students are aware of cyber safety and just pray they do not fall victims to cyber bullying.

While searching around the internet for some inspiration for my assignment I came across a blog that talked about TIM (a Technology Integration Matrix). I just thought I would share it with my fellow EDC3100er’s as I thought it was similar to the “Using Technology vs Technology Integration” model in last weeks learning path.  Click here for more information if you are interested.

Using YouTube and ICT’s with Blooms Taxonomy

I have finally finished the module 2 learning path and can now get stuck into finishing my assignment.  While working through the learning path I found the “Using Technology vs Technology Integration” really interesting and read through the blog that was linked to that topic. While looking through this blog I found some other really interesting information in regards to technology. The first one was “Are you automating or Innovating” , it talks about redesigning technology in the classroom an looks at what type of teacher you are, very similar to the ‘using technology vs technology integration’.  I feel like I am on Information overload, I have notes all over my desk, sticky notes on my laptop and all through my notebook, and I continually start this assignment then read something else so I start all over again. Im sure Im not the only one 🙂

Looking back through what I have done so far I realised I was using a lot of YouTube videos and while looking into this I found this really great photo which came from Adito Rao’s Blog titled 18 ways to use YouTube with Blooms Taxonomy.  I hope this helps anyone else using YouTube videos or Bloom’s Taxonomy for there assignment.c6501c959ced42f7f3a4fad043b88d54
